The second largest city of Maramureș (37,000 inhabitants), located at the confluence of three rivers (Tisa, Iza and Rona), Sighetu Marmației exudes the special atmosphere of a border town: Ukraine is just a stone's throw away, just on the other side of the Tisa. This quiet little town has some beautiful, slightly dilapidated buildings from the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Sighet, as it is called, also has interesting museums, such as the Jewish Culture Museum of Maramureș, located in the house where Elie Wiesel was born. The Memorial to the Victims of Communism, housed in a former prison for opponents, is also worth a visit.
