Baia Mare, the capital of Maramureş (120,000 inhabitants), began to develop in the Middle Ages around a large gold and silver mining centre. Its name also means "Great Mine". In 2000, these same mines were at the origin of a dramatic cyanide pollution, which contaminated the local rivers and then the Danube. The town itself is of little interest. Although some vestiges of the past are still visible, it is being crushed by modern constructions. So hurry up and explore the beautiful countryside at Maramureş!
