Satu Mare ("Big Village" in Romanian, Szatmár in Hungarian) is located a few kilometers from the Hungarian border, near the town of Csenger. A significant proportion of its 100,000 inhabitants are Magyar-speaking. Since the 18th century, it has been an important economic center. Its proximity to Western Europe and its multi-ethnic traditions have accelerated the establishment of foreign companies. The city boasts a number of museums and an attractive center, with streets lined with well-preserved 18th- and 19th-century mansions. Nevertheless, it is not a tourist stop of excessive interest.
