Sibiu captivates all its visitors. Its historic center is one of Romania's most important medieval complexes, remarkably well renovated. Its cobbled streets are colorful and its squares framed by superb mansions. Piața Mare and Piața Mică will captivate you: separated by the Catholic church and the council tower, they form the heart of the city. Sibiu, which was and remains the cultural stronghold of the Saxons (who call it Hermannstadt), will delight art and history lovers with its remarkable religious buildings and numerous museums, including the Brukenthal Museum, one of the finest in Eastern Europe. The city also knows how to live. In summer, the Nicolae Bălcescu pedestrian street is invaded by the terraces of restaurants and cafés. The center stays lively late into the evening, with locals mingling with tourists and vice versa. If you'd rather just stroll around, don't forget to pass under the vaulted porches and explore the superb inner courtyards, where possible, as well as the more popular lower town. Sibiu is easy to visit on foot, and its most interesting sights are within easy reach of each other.
