This small village of 4,200 inhabitants is located in the very north of the department, about 60 kilometres from Buzau. Once there, you have to drive another 10 kilometres on a bad road, towards the north-west, to be able to witness a curious phenomenon called "le feu vif" (focul viu): a flame that burns in the wind, almost permanently. It is the result of a natural emission of underground gases. The village, with its beautiful traditional houses, is also known to be an important centre of wood craftsmanship. 4 kilometres east of Lopătari, in the village of Mânzălești, you will see the white stone of Grunj, a curious rock topped by a cross.
