Buzău (103,000 inhabitants) is the first major city to be crossed by the road linking Bucharest to Moldavia. It is therefore an important road and rail stop. The town itself is not unpleasant, with its tree-lined avenues, but it is of little interest to the tourist. Worth a visit, however, are the judeţ museum, the old cemetery adorned with a sculpture by Brâncuşi (The Prayer) and the main market, vast and colorful, always bustling in the mornings (strada Godeanu). Buzău can also be used as a starting point to visit some of the sights in the surrounding area, including the mud volcanoes.
