A town of around 30,000 inhabitants located on the road that links Piteşti and Curtea de Argeş to Braşov, this important industrial center was, in 1300, the first voivodal capital of the "Romanian Country" (Ţara Românească), also known as Wallachia. Here you can visit the Negru Vodă monastery (Strada Negru Vodă, 64). Its church, surrounded by extensive defensive walls, was built in the 14th century and has since undergone numerous alterations. The princely residence features an exhibition of medieval art. Other sights include the 14th-century Bărăţia church. Its rather massive tower dates from 1730. Last but not least, the small but fascinating Musée d'Ethnographie (Strada Republicii; open Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 5pm; admission €1.30), with its fine examples of local craftsmanship, is well worth a visit. Those who appreciate very old stones will find, 5-6 km south of the town, on the way to Piteşti, some remains of a Roman fort, remnants of a defensive line destroyed by the Goths in 244 AD.
