About twenty kilometres north of Curtea de Argeș, the municipality of Arefu, a little set back from the road, is home to a pretty 19th century wooden church. But people come here mainly for the ruins of the citadel of Poienari, where Vlad Ţepeş lived. Access is via a staircase of some 1,400 steps, which starts near the hydroelectric station, a little after the village of Căpățânenii Pământeni. The citadel also marks the entrance to the mythical road Transfăgărășan. Along this road, shortly after Poienari, you will see the imposing Vidraru dam, 165 m high and 300 m long. The artificial lake it has created, 14 km long, offers superb panoramas.
