Capital of Wallachia between 1418 and 1659, Târgovişte is today a major industrial center, with a population of almost 70,000. Less than 80 km from the capital, the town makes for an interesting day trip. The center is modern and organized around the central park, which is well laid out and pleasant with wide, clean sidewalks. It is home to a number of curiosities. Opposite the House of Culture stands a memorial to the victims of the 1989 revolution. There are also two churches, including the Metropolitan Church, built in the 19th century on the site of a 16th-century church. The old center is concentrated around strada Alexandru Ioan Cuza, where some fine buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries still stand. Points of interest (the Princely Court, Stelea Monastery and museums) are close by and within easy walking distance.
