The Rusizi Park is located on 10 673 ha and is located at a few encâblures in Bujumbura, west and northwest. At an average altitude of 775 m at the delta level, it protects the ecosystems of the Rusizi plain which border between Burundi and Congo (swamps, lagoons and temporary ponds), and also consists of a palm grove and semi-arid savanes in its northern part («La Rukoko»).The predominant vegetation is that of water plants, palm trees and unusual flowers (more than 1 000 plant species in the palm grove sector). Wildlife is made up of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and some small and large mammals. At the end of the 1950 s, there were about 200 elephants, but no longer exists today (a quarter of the mammal species disappeared in half a century). Other animals are endangered, such as marsh antelopes, African chives or le rayé. Threats come from ecological conditions, but especially from men (food, poaching). It was finally in this park that the famous Gustave, an impressive crocodile specimen, imposed his national and international advertising for years.
