Nampo is a port of little interest west of the capital. Originally a small fishing village, the city became a port of trade with the outside world in 1897, and was modernised after the Second World War. Thanks to strong public investment, many industrial facilities are being established in Nampo, such as the Nampo Smelter Complex, the Nampo Glass Corporation, the Nampo Shipbuilding Complex, the Nampo Fishery Complex and other central and local plants. The city has also become a centre for the DPRK shipbuilding industry. To the north of the city are facilities for the transport of goods, aquatic products and fishing, as well as a sea salt factory. Most people come here to play golf.A huge dam 8 km long controls flooding in the Daedong River 13 km from Nampo. On the other side of the river, to the south, is Mount Guwolsan, and the famous Woljongsa Temple.Apples grown in Ryonggang District (룡 강군) are a famous local product.
