Ulleungdo is a superb volcanic island, isolated in the middle of the ocean 137 km from Donghae. A base for the Japanese pirates who have devastated the Korean coast since ancient times, it was recaptured in the5th century under Silla and became a military post. It remained so until 1884, when the government encouraged colonization. There are now 20,000 inhabitants, mainly fishermen (squid, octopus, etc.) and farmers. The island is magnificent, with steep mountains jutting out into the ocean. They are covered in rich vegetation and, on foggy days, the landscape evokes a mysterious land risen from the waves, a kind of marine Scotland. Local specialities include pumpkin caramel and juniper furniture. Once isolated from the rest of the world, Ulleungdo has become a popular tourist destination during the summer months. To the south of Port Dodong, there's a mineral spring. Lazy people who don't want to walk can take a cab, as the road goes almost all the way round the island. Beware, hikers: some parts of the island are very mountainous and can be very confusing.
