Stretching over 15 kilometers, Sanur Bay was one of the first seaside resorts before Kuta supplanted it, when the Suharto government decided to build Bali's largest waterfront hotel here. Less luxurious than Nusa Dua, Sanur nonetheless offers a wide choice of hotels in all price ranges and proves to be much quieter than its little sister Kuta, which has grown up. Indeed, it's not the same type of clientele that comes to frequent its small (artificial) white-sand beaches; here, families and retirees are in the majority. With its pedestrian promenade running along the seafront, Sanur is popular with holidaymakers seeking tranquillity and comfort, as well as a calm sea suitable for children's swimming. But at low tide, the water recedes far into the sea, making swimming impossible. There's a wide range of water sports on offer, both on the beach and in the surrounding area.Discotheques are few and far between, but many restaurants offer live music with local bands, and even in low season, Sanur retains a little life thanks to the expatriate population and the many Balinese musicians who live here. From Sanur, boats leave for the peaceful island of Nusa Lembongan, from where you can reach Nusa Penida.
