In the 1970s, Legian became a haven for hippies and cool babas looking for alternatives to Kuta, then overwhelmed by tourism. Back then, Legian, with its affordable losmen, was reminiscent of the early days of Kuta. Over the years, however, Legian has become increasingly crowded, coming closer to the atmosphere of Kuta, especially in its southern part. The area is now characterized by a multitude of souvenir stores, incessant solicitation and narrow, congested streets, all in a rapidly built, unattractive architectural setting, sandwiched between trendy Seminyak and party-loving Kuta.
