Denpasar, once called Badung of the kingdom of which it was the capital, is a city rich in history and culture, home to over a million inhabitants. Its name means "east of the market". The city, which took on the role of capital of Bali in 1958, is a crossroads of Chinese, Bugi from Makassar and European influences, still visible in its urban architecture. Historically marked by the tragic puputan (mass suicide) at Pemecutan Palace in 1906 against the Dutch, Denpasar subsequently acquired modern structures such as schools, a post office, and road and port infrastructures.Denpasar, which initially stretched out around rice-growing plains, has since incorporated villages such as Kesiman, Kedaton, Panjer, Glogor, Tonja, Tohpati, Sempidi and Kuta. This rapid development blends traditional architecture with a contemporary "neo-cosmic" style, based on the principles of tri Mandala and tri Angga.Although often overlooked by travelers in favor of the more touristy coast, Denpasar offers an interesting museum, markets and a few temples, thus retaining a more marked authenticity than the surrounding coastal regions.
