TISKIWIN MUSEUM OR BERT FLINT COLLECTION

Petit Futé's opinion on TISKIWIN MUSEUM OR BERT FLINT COLLECTION

Vintage plate 2020

This old house with its beautiful flowered patios was built at the beginning of the last century in the Hispano-Moorish style. The name tsikwin (Berber dance) was given to the house by its last owner, the Dutch anthropologist Bert Flint, who was a professor of art history in Casablanca for 40 years. It is here that Bert Flint collected objects brought back from his countless travels. The exhibition retraces the crossing of the Sahara, discovering the caravan routes that linked North Africa to the Sahel, with the main theme of "Art and adornment" of the populations - Berbers for the tribes of the north and Tuaregs for those of the south. The itinerary proposes to discover their history through their appearance and reveals the dress codes, the language of each tribe, which is staged according to the social context. The journey also presents various objects and architectural elements of the habitat. Indeed, it is through art and materials that we learn here to discover these tribes: wool from the Middle Atlas, pottery from the High Atlas, daggers and Berber jewelry from the Anti-Atlas and the High Atlas ... For Bert Flint, the vocation of the museum is mainly "to make Morocco known as a country in Africa, a continent to which it undeniably belongs". The anthropologist has devoted a book to his tropism entitled "Afro-Berber culture in the neolithic Saharan tradition in North Africa and the Sahel countries".
