A landmark for the caravaneers of yesteryear and for today's visitors, the Almohad mosque stretches its 77 metres of delicacy towards the sky.
For nine centuries, this masterpiece of Hispano-Moorish art has dominated the Red City. When the city was taken by the Almohads in 1147, Sultan Abd el-Moumen undertook to re-establish a firm doctrine of Islam and to endow his capital with a mosque symbolizing these values. But soon after the inauguration, it was realized that the mosque did not point to Mecca! He ordered its destruction and began the construction of the one that watches over Marrakech today. The Koutoubia owes its name to the book souk that once stood at its feet.

Plus haut batiment de la ville d'environ 330m, on l'apercoit de loin et c'est un incontournable.
Jolis parcs limitrophes.
Un classique de Marrakech à découvrir de plus près.
