Museum retracing the history of the GDR's construction of the Wall in 1962 through the testimonies of dozens of people.
Opened in 1962 - shortly after the construction of the Wall - the museum adjoined the famous Checkpoint Charlie, the link between East and West in the heart of the city, and its famous sign stating in all the languages of the protagonists of the time that "You are leaving the American sector". The museum's founder, Rainer Hildebrandt, set up the project as part of his fight against injustice and as a tribute to the thousands of individuals and families separated by the Wall. The exhibition traces the history of the Cold War, and features testimonials from dozens of people who fled or tried to escape the GDR. With numerous authentic documents and objects, many ingenious escape attempts are presented.
It has to be said that the museography has seriously aged, and the sheer number of photos and panels (in four languages) causes a certain indigestion. The museum tries to renew itself by drawing parallels between the Berlin Wall and other situations in the world (conflicts in the Middle East, Ukraine, etc.), which makes the subject even more confusing.
For those who would like to save on the price of an entrance ticket, you'll find numerous information panels (in English and German) in the various places in the city marked by the presence of the Wall, such as the memorial on Bernauer Straße or next to the Topography of the Terrors, for example.
