BASILICA OF THE HOLY APOSTLES
A harmonious-looking church with two turrets on the road to Aachen in front of the Roman ramparts.
A haven of peace in the middle of the city's traffic. The Basilica of the Holy Apostles is one of twelve Romanesque churches in Cologne, with a very harmonious appearance on the edge of the Neumarkt. Especially worth seeing is the beautiful triconical choir with two turrets. The choir in the shape of a clover leaf was built around 1200. The rest of the building that we see today begins in the 11th century. At that time, the church was located on the road to Aachen, right in front of the Roman ramparts at the western main gate. In the 13th century, the church was considerably enlarged. It was at this time that the octagonal dome was added, giving the building its monumental, almost Byzantine appearance.
