Church built in the century with a triconical choir on an island in the Rhine above warehouses in Cologne.
If you stand on the banks of the Rhine or in Deutz and look towards the city center, you will see three unforgettable monuments: the cathedral, the town hall and the tower of the Gross-Sankt-Martin church with its bell tower. Built in the 13th century on the ruins of another place of worship, this church is one of the few with a triconical choir. In Roman times, the site was located on an island in the Rhine and contained several warehouses. The church was built over these warehouses and incorporated their ruins. After Gross-Sankt-Martin was severely damaged during World War II, impressive archaeological excavations were carried out under the choir. The upper parts of the church were rebuilt after World War II and are a typical example of Rhenish architecture between 1150 and 1250. Today, the interior of the former Benedictine church is characterized on the one hand by its imposing architecture and on the other hand by its minimalist furnishings.
