In 1830, a Gallic necropolis was discovered in the commune. More than 3,000 medals were found. Their number and variety attest to the presence of a sizeable Gallo-Roman community. In 1944, La Cambe was liberated from German occupation. In 1954, as part of the Franco-German agreement on war graves, it was decided to develop the La Cambe site as one of six German regrouping cemeteries in Normandy. The Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge (Service for the Maintenance of German Military Graves) took on this task. The cemetery was inaugurated on September 21, 1961.
