Warnemünde ("Mouth of the Warnow") is the prestigious seaside resort of Rostock, where Berliners have been going to the first weekend of freedom for almost two centuries. Warnemünde's rich past has left its mark, and it is perhaps the most elegant resort in the German Baltic Sea, with its bourgeois villas and gabled houses on the port/channel. It is a popular summer swimming and excursion destination. Outside the high season, the place is not lacking in charm and is a pleasant stopover: if you are in Rostock, go ahead!Warnemünde, a former fishing village, has been part of Rostock since the 14th century, before becoming a prestigious resort in the 19th century. The port/channel (Alter Strom) leading to the beach and pier is the nerve centre of all of Warnemünde, you will find all the restaurants you want on the street side, on the port side fish-based fast-food restaurants installed in boats. The purpose of any trip to Warnemünde is a walk on the pier and then on the long beach. Stroll through the charming little streets of the "village". In season especially, hotels are very expensive, so for small budgets it is better to stay in Rostock. In low season, you may be able to negotiate fairly low prices.
