The city of Brandenburg-on-the-La-Havel was the historical heart of the Brandenburg March when it was colonised by the margraves of the Ascanian dynasty, Albrecht the Bear and his descendants, from the 12th century onwards. The town, like most of the localities in the region, was founded on the site of a Slavic settlement. Brandenburg gave its name to the region, as it was the main bishopric of the region and its Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul still bears witness to this today. It was soon overtaken by Berlin and Potsdam and fell into a quiet lethargy (not to say an obvious depression since the end of the GDR). But it will surprise the visitor with the beauty of its medieval relics, especially its numerous churches. If you want to follow in the footsteps of the Nordic Middle Ages and its superb red brick buildings, go no further. The site, very lacustrine, spread over several islands and banks of the winding Havel, is picturesque. Apart from its precious remains and beautiful location, Brandenburg an der Havel is not an ideal place to stay. It is therefore more worth a day trip from Berlin.
