With a length of 100 km, Qeshm is the largest of the islands in the Persian Gulf, twice as large by comparison as Bahrain. It is home to several coastal villages populated by fishermen and some shipyards are still working on the manufacture of traditional boats, the lenj. A true mineral paradise, the island - a major salt exporter - is worth a detour if only to enjoy the beauty and variety of its landscapes. First stopover in the small fishing village of Laft. In December at 11am, the heat is very hot. Near the water's edge, a dozen workers, their heads wrapped in tape and their skin blackened by the sun, are busy repairing an old shack. At the exit of Laft, a strange landscape: the houses disappear and on the left side of the road, the horizon is filled with serrated peaks. The sea has lost its turquoise blue colour and has covered itself with a thick green coat. It is the mangrove of Hara, a protected site that shelters a great biodiversity. It is possible to navigate through the canals of this marine jungle, whose colours are striking. The water offers a magnificent gradation of blues, alternating turquoise, navy blue or water green while the vegetation is uniformly green. In the south of the island, the coast is just as wild. About twenty kilometres from the town of Qeshm, to the western tip of the island, the setting is identical. The road then crosses a landscape very close to the African savannah: yellow earth burnt by the sun, flat trees and in places small villages with deserted streets, composed of a few terra cotta houses. The coast is hemmed with desert sandy beaches. At times, small deserted coves also interrupt this immense strip of sand. However, Iranians prefer to use the beach outside the city of Qeshm. To see in particular, the rock formations with the sensation of a collapse of the plateaus in places. It is also an opportunity to visit the Achaemenid temple and its tiered galleries, dedicated to Mithra and built on a mountainside.
