In Bam, with 75,000 inhabitants, there is a pre- and post-earthquake situation. It occurred in December 2003 and devastated the city, destroying almost all of Arg-e Bam, the majestic citadel listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The result: 40,000 dead, 50,000 wounded. Today, the city is still under reconstruction, and while mosques and bazaars have been rebuilt, housing remains precarious. Many citizens still live in prefabricated buildings. A stone's throw from the citadel, between Tabatabaei and Pasdaran streets, a strange district made up entirely of tin houses hosts all kinds of shops. On Fridays, or after the shops have closed, strolling along these large avenues of metal constructions makes you realize how far you still have to go to give the city back its serene appearance.
