Tehran is a densely populated and highly polluted megalopolis, where some prefer not to dwell. Yet it lacks energy and houses ancient jewels and some daring of modern architecture (Tour tower, Tabiat Bridge) that deserve to prolong the stay. On a mountain background, it is thriving, lively and exciting, a symbol of this changing country. A student and political challenge home, Tehran also brings together a series of museums worthy of the greatest interest. In winter you can even go skiing on the Chaîne chain which dominates the capital.Known literally as «city on slopes», the capital of Iran - since 1795 - is between 1 050 and 1 950 m above sea level. At the end of a dry plateau, at the foot of Mount Damavand (5 671 m), extinct volcano of the Alborz, it enjoys a strategic situation at the crossroads of the road, which runs along the Piémont of the Alborz and tracks leading to the oasis of the country. Towards the north, the city opens on the different valleys that drive to the Caspian Sea. Tehran concentrates political, administrative, economic and military powers. A sprawling and fascinating metropolis, plagued by housing problems, with traffic jams, it has more than 8 million walls inhabitants, 15 million by including the suburbs. It is also the capital of Tehran province. Some figures give the measure of its extension. If there were 1 600 000 inhabitants in 1956, Tehran now brings together more than 20% of the total population of the country, of which 65% are under the age of 25. The city has no charm in the city of Moderne or Shiraz, but there is no shortage of interest. The modernization efforts undertaken in the early 1930 s by Reza Shah (the father of the last Shah) led to the formation, in the north, of a geometric urban plan on a broad scale. Only the old town, in the south, retains its eastern appearance with its narrow streets built around the great bazaar. The municipality is making great efforts to modernize and energize this capital, which is a program of exhibitions and congresses, builds new equipment and deploys urban facilities for a large population, particularly parks, with a view to the democratization of culture and recreation. Finally, let us know that Tehran has a very continental climate: cold in winter (temperatures below 0 ° C) and extremely hot in summer (over 35 ° C on average).
