Forth Smith is the gateway to Wood Buffalo. Founded in 1874 by the Hudson's Bay Company, it is also the focal point of the southern Northwest Territories due to its location on the banks of the Slave River, which is the main waterway for the transportation of men and goods to the Far North. Today, the territorial cathedral and the bishop's residence can be seen in Mission Park. The Northern Life Museum presents the local fauna, including some endangered species. But the main point of interest in the city is the famous Wood Buffalo National Park.
