At the foot of Signal Hill, in the rear, Quidi Vidi (part of St. John's) lies along a rocky inlet connecting Quidi Vidi Lake to the sea. It is one of the most picturesque villages on the Avalon Peninsula with its brightly colored houses, some dating back to 1750, its small chapel and its fishing harbor that has been in operation since the 17th century. Quidi Vidi Lake is the summer venue for the famous St. John's Regatta which has been held since 1826. On a promontory at the entrance to the Narrows are the remains of the Quidi Vidi Battery, built by the French in 1762 to defend the entrance to St. John's from the rear.
