Péribonka (meaning "where the sand moves") lies close to the Péribonka River, Lac Saint-Jean and Parc de la Pointe-Taillon. We remember Louis Hémon, who made this small village famous in his novel Maria Chapdelaine, published in 1914. Louis Hémon, who died in 1913 (and was born in Brest in 1880), didn't have time to savor his fame, as his work was published after his accidental death, which occurred immediately after he had presented his manuscript to his Parisian publisher. A museum in Péribonka is dedicated to him, and the house where he lived in the early 20th century is also on the site.
