Petit Futé's opinion on SAINT JOSEPH'S ORATORY OF THE MONT-ROYAL

Rising on the northwestern flank of Mount Royal, this site is one of the most visited in Montreal, in part because of the magnificent view it offers from its terrace. A place of meditation, this impressive neo-Renaissance-style basilica, topped by a gigantic octagonal copper dome, welcomes pilgrims from all over the world who come to make their devotions to St. Joseph. From early June to Labour Day, guided tours of the Oratory are offered daily. Shops, food and lodging are available on site.
A vast development project is underway (completion in 2021): a new reception and services pavilion with a green roof, a large multifunctional outdoor pedestrian plaza, reconfiguration of the garden, a new monumental structure for the only carillon in Quebec and the addition of five bells to the current 56 bells, an observation centre at the level of the basilica's skylight, and so on. Free concert every Sunday at 3:30 p.m. and outside at 7 p.m. in the summer.
Did you know that? The basilica stands 283 metres above sea level, making it the highest point in Montreal. From Queen Mary Road to the Basilica's portico, one can climb 283 steps, 99 of which are wooden steps reserved for prayer and are used by pilgrims who wish to climb to their knees. Brother André's heart, exposed to the general public, was stolen during the night of March 15 to 16, 1973, and was found almost two years later.

vue superbe.
