The locality faces a bottleneck in the St. Lawrence where a string of islands and several rapids are concentrated, the latter being among the most difficult to cross between Montreal and the Great Lakes. It is also here that we find the most important difference in level of the river. For a long time, this was the main gateway for imports from Upper Canada. As a result, fortifications were erected in 1812 to protect the waterway, and the Coteau-du-Lac National Historic Site recounts these facts in an entertaining and playful way. In good weather, walk 10 km west to the beautiful beach at Saint-Zotique.
