Located on Route 125, which leads to Saint-Donat and Mont-Tremblant National Park, Chertsey was once a hunting and fishing territory for the Algonquins. Following the conquest of the St. Lawrence Valley, its lands were coveted for the wood found here in abundance. From 1820 on, Indians, Métis and squatters, not to mention Irish settlers arriving from Rawdon, gradually settled there. Towards the middle of the 19th century, the development of the Township of Chertsey accelerated, welcoming primarily Catholic and French-speaking settlers. The municipal corporation was created in 1856, the date of the founding of Chertsey.
