Percé owes its name to a spectacular rock formed by marine erosion just off the coast. Its sheer size boggles the mind: it weighs around 5 million tonnes and has been there, with its feet in the water, for 350 million years. This exceptional site continues to inspire artists and attract tourists from all over the world. Jacques Cartier landed at Percé in 1535, and European fishermen began settling on its coastline in the 15th century. Bonaventure Island, offshore but clearly visible, is a sanctuary for migratory birds, home to some 250,000 of which almost half make up the Northern Gannet colony.
