Its name comes from a Micmac Indian word meaning "beaver pond". An industrial port, commercial and administrative center, Matane boasts a shipyard and Quebec's largest shrimp processing plant, the perfect opportunity to enjoy these little decapod crustaceans in every possible way. Matane is also an arrival and departure point for travelers (a ferry links Matane to Baie-Comeau or Godbout, on the North Shore), not to mention the first major city you'll come across on your way into the Gaspé region from the west of the province.
