It was here in July 1534 that Jacques Cartier planted his cross, symbolically taking possession of Canada on behalf of the King of France. Gaspé comes from the word gespeg, which in Micmac means "end of the land, end, extremity". The downtown area is a good base for visiting the surrounding attractions, including the jewel of Forillon Park, and for water sports activities. The region is also famous for its salmon fishing, which abounds in the York, Dartmouth and Saint John rivers. In recent years, the port of call has welcomed international cruises, including new winter cruises starting in January 2025.
