Located at the mouth of the Malbaie River, this administrative centre is the most important town in Charlevoix. Samuel de Champlain named the bay "malle baye" (bad bay) in 1608, because his ships, which anchored there, all ran aground. After the English conquest, it was renamed Murray Bay by John Nairn and Malcolm Fraser, two Scottish officers, in memory of Governor James Murray who granted it to them. A major tourist destination (dozens of beautiful inns), La Malbaie includes the former municipalities of Pointe-au-Pic, Rivière-Malbaie, Sainte-Agnès, Cap-à-l'Aigle and Saint-Fidèle.
