Located on the northeast side of the island in a deep harbour in the Atlantic, this harbour separated into two twin towns, Sydney and North Sydney, is the industrial capital of Cape Breton Island. Its coal deposits, the largest in Atlantic Canada, have encouraged the development of steel mills. The heart of the city, with its great places to stay, eat and go out, is in the waterfront area, around Prince and Esplanade streets. The town of North Sydney is the departure and arrival point for ferries to Newfoundland (two connections: Port aux Basques year-round and Argentia from mid-June to the end of September).
