Shippagan, whose name means "passage of the ducks" in Micmac, is the commercial fishing capital of the province (Fisheries and Aquaculture Festival in July). A university town, it is a city on the move: shows, sports, cultural activities, recreation, community life and associations all contribute to enriching the quality of life of its residents, not to mention the New Brunswick Aquarium and Marine Centre, its main attraction. In winter, the very popular Ice Carnival warms hearts. A drawbridge and a dike link Shippagan to Lamèque Island, known for its dense vegetation of dwarf conifers and peat bogs.
