In the Salish language, Kelowna means "grizzly". A major cultural destination, Kelowna's artistic heritage lies in its colourful landscapes and the beauty of its natural contrasts. Many artists celebrating wine or sculpture exhibit and sell their work. Kelowna has a population of 107,000, but that number increases by a few thousand during the summer months when young workers flock to the area to pick fruit from the many orchards. Since the first apple tree was planted in 1884 by Father Pandosy, a missionary from Marseilles, fruit production has been the city's main economic activity.
