Located an hour's drive north of Victoria, Chemainus is a charming tourist town with a population of 3,000, whose history and culture are recounted in some 40 murals dotted around the streets. This street art has even given rise to a festival. A somewhat Far-Western spirit lingers in the area, notably in the form of a few shopfronts with an outdated look and a single post office for residents' mail. For a long time, the village's economy was based on the wood industry, which it had to diversify, notably by turning to a more tertiary economy such as the tourism industry. Between nature and the charm of yesteryear, one thing is certain: you'll want to go back.
