There are two highways leading out of Victoria: Highway 14 to the west and Highway 1 to the north. The south coast of the island is relatively steep but offers beautiful scenery. Head west on the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) and venture out on Highway 1A (Sooke Road): take time to walk around the Royal Roads University campus before continuing on Highway 14 to Sooke and Port Renfrew.Sooke is a friendly town of 15,000 people, with art galleries, a museum and great restaurants Then escape to French Beach Provincial Park with, if you're lucky, the grey whales for company.
