From its creation until the mid-1970s, when it took the name of Nkayi, the town was called Jacob, after the French engineer Léon Jacob, who was in charge of the CFCO route, and who still gives his name to the railway station. The town grew up around the railroad and thanks to the Société Industrielle et Agricole du Niari (SIAN), a sugar company that gave way to Saris-Congo after its privatization. The capital of Bouenza, Nkayi, with its population of around 50,000, is one of Congo's largest cities. Today, sugar production still accounts for the bulk of the region's economic activity, supplying the country with sugar.
