Kolwezi was founded in 1937, 300 kilometers west of Lubumbashi, in one of the richest mining basins in the Katanga highlands (copper, cobalt, uranium, radium). Even more than in Likasi or Lubumbashi, the imprint of the former all-powerful Gécamines is omnipresent in Kolwezi, where it shaped not only the industrial and urban landscapes, but also history and mentalities. It provided a whole range of ancillary needs for its managers, employees and their families (schools, hospitals, leisure and training centers). But in addition to its mining activities, Kolwezi is also infamous for the invasion of Katangese secessionist rebels supported by Angola and Cuba in 1978, and the famous landing of French and Belgian paratroopers at Mobutu's request ("the legion jumps on Kolwezi"). They put down the rebellion, which nevertheless claimed around a thousand victims, including 170 Europeans massacred by the rebels...In terms of urban planning, Kolwezi is a typical example of a mining town planned and built to suit its industry and colonial criteria. This can still be seen today in the division of the two communes of Kolwezi: Dilala to the west (which corresponds more or less to the white residential districts of the time); and Manika to the east (which includes the workers' and indigenous town). In recent years, the town has undergone exponential development in terms of extension, public buildings and new roads. The outskirts of Kolwezi are increasingly sought-after by foreign mining companies, who are expanding and building compounds to accommodate their employees. In 10 years, Kolwezi has changed completely. And the trend continues, with new roads bypassing the town and providing direct access to the mines, and the establishment of businesses in these new areas. The presence of many foreigners in the town is also reflected in the significant increase in the number of international-standard hotels and restaurants in just a few years. This points to the potential for tourism development. Several sites have opened (Wasela lake, Manika wildlife reserve, etc.). Not to mention the potential for industrial tourism, given the exceptional sites and facilities in and around the town.
