For most of the colonial period, the most important city in Santo Domingo was Cape-French and it was expected that the Port-au-Prince would become the capital of the Vent Islands.Since then, the city has grown, sometimes despite common sense. For the visitor, there is a feeling of deep promiscuity that the extreme traffic difficulties make it even more acute.Today, and since the devastating earthquake in 2010, the situation in the capital remains tragic for many of its inhabitants. Temporary camps have become slums. The streets have been déblayées from their rubble but many buildings are waiting to be rebuilt or razed. Itinerant merchants are sinking on sidewalks flooded by mud and dust. For Westerners, the atmosphere is astonishing and, it must be recognised, sometimes dangerous. It's a well-known visitor that you'll find yourself here. Taking into account this particular context, however, we can walk in a few areas, such as the Champ de Mars, a huge place where parks are placed around a presidential palace in bad condition. On the side of Pacot and Turgeau, the atmosphere is more residential. An easy population lives in these quiet neighbourhoods.
