Lying on the banks of the Vaigai River, Madurai is Tamil Nadu's third most populous city, with 1,799,000 inhabitants. Nicknamed the Athens of the East, Madurai was an important cultural and commercial center as early as 550, and the capital of the great Pandya kings. The city boasts a rich cultural heritage dating back over 2,500 years. The beautiful fish-eyed goddess Meenakshi, with her husband, Lord Sundareswar or Shiva, resides in her magnificent temple in the heart of the city. The temple receives around 10,000 visitors a day! The temple city is also famous for its jasmine flowers, exported to other cities in India and abroad. Apart from the temple's fervent atmosphere, Madurai is a bustling city with intense commercial activity.
