241,770 inhabitants. Pondicherry, officially named Puducherry since 2006, is nestled on India's eastern coastline.Even today, this relatively peaceful city is an enchanting and fascinating place, divided between the "White City", the former French colonial town, and the other, more lively and colorful part of town. The Ville Blanche offers wide, tree-lined streets, intersecting at ninety degrees, lined with beautiful residences surrounded by gardens. Bougainvillea branches spread over the walls, adding their fragrance to the nostalgic, old-fashioned atmosphere of the district. At crossroads, plaques recall the French presence: "rue Labourdonnais", "rue Dumas"... At the southern end of the seafront - a veritable promenade des Anglais de Pondichéry! - the statue of Governor Dupleix evokes the ephemeral dream of French India, but it's Mahatma Gandhi who's in the best place, in a kiosk in the middle of Goubert Avenue.
