Mamallapuram, officially renamed Mahabalipuram in 2019, is a small town of around 15,000 inhabitants located 58 km south of Chennai. Still virtually unknown some twenty years ago, the town has now turned to tourism, with its Kashmiri handicraft vendors, beach hawkers, busloads of tourists on weekends and low-cost hotel-restaurants. However, its magnificent rock-cut monuments, including the Temple of the Shore, its early-morning fishing port atmosphere, the hammering sounds of stonecutters and its laid-back atmosphere more than justify a visit to Mahabs, as it's known. Since it is considered one of the most westernized cities in Tamil Nadu and is close to Chennai airport, many travelers prefer to stay here on arrival and start their South India tour. It's a destination not to be missed, where it's good to take a break before (re)hitting the road.
