25,736 inhabitants. Kovalam is one of the most famous Indian beaches. A favorite site of Europeans since the 1930s, Kovalam consists of three successive crescent-shaped beaches. A sheltered natural bay, Kovalam was a tropical paradise with azure waters and lush green palm trees before it became an overcrowded resort in high season. Bathing, swimming, Ayurvedic treatments and massages, yoga and meditation: the entertainment possibilities are numerous, but the authenticity is not there anymore. The lack of nightlife has gradually dissuaded many tourists (especially Russians) from coming, and they now turn to Goa or Sri Lanka. Hotels, restaurants and Kashmiri stores are crowded along Lighthouse Beach. Nevertheless, Kovalam is a restful stop if you are traveling for a long time in India. Kovalam is located 16 km south of Thiruvananthapuram.
