It is the main city of the Kodagu district (formerly Coorg) and a famous mountain resort (1,060 m), surrounded by spice and coffee plantations. This city of 33,000 people has some charming picnic spots, including Abbey Falls. A hike can take you to the summit of Tadeyendamol, the highest in the region, from where you can see the Arabian Sea in the distance. Other sites to visit around Madikeri include Raja's Seat, a well-kept garden with vast views of the hills, Bhaga-Mandala and, finally, Tala-Cauvery, where the Cauvery springs. Once renowned for their knowledge of hunting, the Kodava have now become ardent defenders of the environment and guardians of the natural resources of their region. If you hear gunshots fired in Kodagu, know that it's only a few Kodava who test their skills by shooting coconuts at the top of trees! Madikeri is widely frequented by locals who come to escape the heat of the plains, but it is of limited tourist interest to foreign travellers.
