Nicknamed the "City of Palaces", Mysore, officially Mysuru since 2014, has an enchanting charm and a delicious scent of sandalwood and jasmine. Located 159 km southwest of Bangalore at an altitude of 770 m, this former imperial city of almost a million inhabitants was the capital of the Woodeyars, who ruled it from the 15th century until Independence in 1947. Mysore is a pleasant city to stroll around on foot: in fact, it's one of the few cities in India with walkable sidewalks! A market with a thousand scents, a sumptuous maharajah's palace, craftsmen making incense, biddis and sandalwood necklaces... you name it, sweet Mysore is definitely worth a visit.
